Lifebread Mini Farm

We are a mini farm located in Bogalusa, LA, focusing on raising chickens and rabbits.

Homestead Chickens

Our main chicken breeding program involves selectively breeding large, stocky birds that can easily be used for sustainable meat and egg production. I call them our "Homestead" chickens because these birds allow homesteaders to raise their own chicks for meat and eggs, rather than having to rely on commercial broiler chicks purchased from hatcheries.

WE WILL BE SCALING THIS PROGRAM BACK DUE TO SPACE RESTRAINTS ON THE FARM, BUT WILL CONTINUE TO OFFER HIGH QUALITY DUAL-PURPOSE BIRDS FROM THE FARM.

Red Sex Links

Our main chicken breeding program beginning in 2024 will be the production of Red Sex Link pullets for sale. Red Sex Link is a general term used to describe a hybrid, not a breed, that can be easily sexed at birth based on down color. It is achieved by using a male with the red color gene and females with the silver color gene.

Any purebred red and silver parents will work, so we will be using our Silver Laced Wyandotte hens and our Homestead rooster for 2024 production.

Testing will begin this Summer on our current cross, with pullets becoming available starting next Spring, so stay tuned for that.

Silver Laced Wyandottes

Our main chicken breeding program beginning in 2024 will be the production of Red Sex Link pullets for sale; however, because we will be using Silver Laced Wyandotte hens for that cross, we will maintain a flock of purebred Silver Laced Wyandottes. We are expanding our flock this year so that we can more easily meet demand for next year.

Silkies

Silkies are a bantam breed of chickens that are best known for being the mother hens of the chicken world. They have all black skin and feet with fluffy, hair-like feathers all over their bodies, which includes the cutest afros, beards and feathered legs. They also have and extra toe on each foot, making them one of the most unique breeds there is.

Our silkie flock was started in 2021 with 12 original birds of pure color. Since then, it has remained a closed flock, with new additions each year from the offspring. This has resulted in some interesting color patterns that you won't find on any hatchery website, or probably with any other breeders.

Silkies are an excellent option for people who are raising chickens in city-limits, with low amounts of space, or even for children, as their small size makes them quieter and safer to keep than full-sized birds. Even the roos tend to get along much better than most full-sized birds, with minimal fighting.

These will remain on our farm due to all of the reasons above, and because I absolutely LOVE them. We have good availability on these also, so place an order today and we will get you silkies of your own.

New Zealand/Californian rabbits

New Zealand/Californian rabbits, are our main business at the mini farm. These rabbits are known for high growth rates, fine bones, and great mothering skills. Many of our does will have 10-12 babies each time, and we even had one mom raise 13!

We sell rabbits to individuals for pets, breeders and meat as well as sell in bulk to a rabbit processor.

Rabbit prices start at $20 each for 7-8 week old bunnies.
